The Ohio House recently passed HB 228, an extreme version of a "Stand Your Ground" law that will make our communities less safe and take local control away from cities and municipalities to pass life-saving gun regulations.

I am writing today to urge you to protect Ohioans by opposing "Stand Your Ground" bills SB 180 and HB 280. In addition to importing an extreme version of the disastrous "Stand Your Ground" law that will make our communities less safe, it will take local control away from cities and municipalities to regulate guns and eliminate the requirement for concealed handgun permit holders to keep their hands in plain sight during a traffic stop. This extreme and dangerous bill is opposed by the Ohio Fraternal Order of Police, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Ohio Association of Police Chiefs, the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association, and many others. These brave public servants are responsible for keeping our communities safe and research shows that Stand Your Ground will lead to more violence and preventable deaths. In fact, recent research estimates that a similar law in Florida resulted in an estimated 4,200 additional gun deaths. I urge you to support local law enforcement and prevent needless gun deaths by opposing any effort to expand Stand Your Ground in Ohio.
